Musaid Al-Salim

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador

of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Azerbaijan

The Republic of Azerbaijan celebrates its Independence Day on October 18, 2016. The last level in the history of Azerbaijani statehood has started on the eve of the fall of the Soviet Union and with the adoption of the Constitutional Act "the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan'' on October 18, 1991, that people was waiting for it a long time ago, and continues to this day.

After the presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1993, Azerbaijan entered a new stage. During the leadership of the former president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, he managed to reduce unemployment in the country and reined and curbed criminal groups, established the basic institutions in terms of the independent state, bring the peace and stability and involved major foreign investments to the country. Starting from 1995, the Republic of Azerbaijan evolved and succeeded in a short-term period on the establishment of diplomatic relations. Today Azerbaijan Republic has diplomatic relations with 177 countries and enjoys the membership of 38 international organizations. In addition, 91 diplomatic missions to the foreign countries and international organizations have been established abroad, while there are diplomatic missions of 62 countries in Baku. And now the Republic of Azerbaijan plays a positive and affirmative role in the international community to achieve security and stability for the region and for the world. In addition, during this short period a number of economic and development achievements were achieved which have served the people of Azerbaijan.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, on my behalf and on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia I am pleased to extend to the President of the Azerbaijan Republic His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev and to Azerbaijani people sustainable progress and prosperity, safety and wealth under the leadership of Azerbaijan Government.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the first countries that recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 30, 1991. The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were established on February 24, 1992. After that the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened in Riyadh in April 1994, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was opened in Baku in 1999.

The Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia share distinctive fraternal relations based on mutual respect and brotherhood. There are mutual Islamic inheritor and full cooperation and coordination between two countries to serve the interests of two governments, which means a source of pride for all of us. And all of these thanks to the full attention and care of His Excellency President Ilham Aliyev and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.

The first steps for the development of relations between the two countries began when the former President of the Republic of Azerbaijan / Heydar Aliyev visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1994. After this visit new opportunities for the development of bilateral relations emerged. During the visit, the first General Agreement was signed on cooperation in economic, trade, investment, technology, culture, youth and sports fields.

The Relations between the two countries have gained its highest level under the leadership of the president Mr. Ilham Aliyev. Thus, after his first official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2005, the development of bilateral relations began its new stage.

There is no doubt that 2015 was a successful year for the development of the Azerbaijani-Saudi relations, after His Excellency President Ilham Aliyev’s visiting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in former April, followed by several high-level visits.

So far, 14 agreements between Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia were signed. It is expected to be signed eight new agreements in the near future, and we are now with our brothers striving to raise the level of cooperation in all economic and investment fields, particularly the tourism, agriculture and mutual investment areas in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

There are good opportunities in the field of tourism, like some Azerbaijani regions that have potential of tourism, with beautiful sights and spectacular nature of the charming beaches such Shaki, Qabala, Quba, Gandja etc., specially considering that Saudi citizens prefer to spend their holidays abroad.

According to the latest official statistics the number of Saudi tourists who have spent their vacation abroad during the last year, is about four million tourists, and according to international statistics that the Saudi tourists spend more than $ 20 billion every year on tourism through travel abroad or intra-tourism. Many countries around the world are competing to attract Saudi tourists. And there is a chance to introduce Azerbaijan to the Saudi tourists. Especially that there is a lot of convergence between the two peoples, whether in culture, religion and customs, that is making the cooperation between the two countries easier and more efficient.

And I am sure that the bilateral political, economic and cultural relations will continue to prosper as a result of the fraternal relations between the leaders of the two countries, which has an important role in the development of bilateral relations. And I am confident that these relations between two countries will increase more in future, InShaAllah.
